Key Takeaways

  • FBISE announced a revised grading formula for SSC and HSSC examinations.
  • The new system will be implemented in phases, starting in 2026 for first-year students and completing by 2027 for final-year students.
  • New top grades include A++ (96%-100%, “Extraordinary”) and A+ (91%-95%, “Exceptional”).
  • The grading scale details specific percentage bands down to a D grade (40%-50%) and an 'Ungraded' status for scores below 40%.
  • Students who do not qualify under the new system will still be allowed to reappear for exams under existing conditions.

The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has officially announced a comprehensive revision to its grading formula for both Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations. This new grading scheme will be rolled out incrementally, beginning with the First Annual Examinations of 2026 for SSC-I and HSSC-I students, and fully extending to SSC-II and HSSC-II by the First Annual Examinations of 2027. The revised structure introduces highly specific grade tiers, such as A++ for achieving 96% to 100% (“Extraordinary”) and A+ for 91% to 95% (“Exceptional”). Other notable grades include B++ (“Excellent”) for 81%-85% and C (“Above Average”) for 51%-60%. The lowest passing threshold is set at a D grade for scores between 40% and 50%, with scores below 40% resulting in an “Ungraded” classification. The FBISE assured stakeholders that students who fail to meet the new standards will retain the eligibility to reappear for examinations, provided they meet all necessary prerequisites.
